The store's security guard, seeing a young Black woman out late with a White child, accuses Emira of kidnapping two-year-old Briar. A small crowd gathers, a bystander films everything, and Emira is furious and humiliated. Alix resolves to make things right.
But Emira herself is aimless, broke, and wary of Alix's desire to help. At 25, she is about to lose her health insurance and has no idea what to do with her life. When the video of Emira unearths someone from Alix's past, both women find themselves on a crash course that will upend everything they think they know about themselves and each other.

Perfekt
Everything that was written is so beautiful! Race and racism are immensely complex issues and the book handles them really well. What counts as a racist remark, am I covertly racist when I prefer something or someone's company, how can I avoid positive racism, is diversity almost always just a checklist for people in power to feel less racist? I'll be haunted by these questions but I'll also be more mindful of my actions, words, company and taking decisions on someone else's behalf. As a brown woman, a general note to everyone who wants to not be racist or come off as one, or being like Alix and Kelly from the book, ask. Ask how that person feels in that given moment, ask THEM if they need help, don't assume and don't treat a person from minority as your own property that needs to be protected. Always ask first 😊

Addictive indeed
I couldn't stop listening.
Well written and perceptive character descriptions, you have to go on reading to find out if each person fullfils their goals. Elmira's girlfriends sound like a fun crowd. Well worth it.

Lovely
The performance was alright, I would have preferred the characters' voices and intonation to be a little different, but it is alright as it is too.

I would've wished for a different ending. It felt flat as if the writer didn't really had time to finished it. It just feels weird for me atm. maybe by the next reading it will feel better, but I thought that it wasn't a fear ending.

Good insight to racism
The Story is really good, you want to know how it ends. The end is sad but also realistic and good. The story gives good insights on how different and covered racism can appear.

Very US-American
The premise of the story is interesting and the speaker is nice enough, but most of the characters have the same voice. It's difficult to tell everyone apart and we learn about the characters at a very slow pace.
The characters' interactions all seem very superficial and fake, what people act like and say and how we're told they feel don't match up.
I feel like I am having trouble understanding this story because it is very US American, it feels outlandish and strange and tedious to het through.

the narrator's performance was good. The book was easy to listen. However, there wasn't much to the plot itself. I found it rather flat: especially the reveal of the background story felt rushed and anticlimactic.
